The Power of Collaboration in Driving Innovation

Innovation in healthcare is not the work of a lone genius—it thrives on collaboration. But innovativeness goes beyond healthcare—any client-facing industry can benefit. It’s not just about technology or AI; it’s about addressing everyday challenges through trust, communication, and a shared commitment to improvement.

Last month, I helped launch The National Consortium for Innovativeness in Healthcare at the University of Iowa. We brought together top healthcare organizations, nursing leaders, and academic institutions to push forward the boundaries of innovativeness.

This Initiative Underscores a Fundamental Truth:
Meaningful healthcare advancements require seamless collaboration between clinicians, academics, and leaders. Whether improving processes, developing new technologies, or enhancing patient care, teamwork is the foundation of progress.

But what makes collaboration effective in healthcare? As I mentioned in my column on Collaboration in the April 2025 issue of Nurse Leader, the Consortium has identified five key relational subdimensions essential for collaboration that cover t areas such as trust, respectful communication, and psychological safety.

Further, for collaboration to thrive, leadership plays a crucial role. Organizations that foster a culture of innovation ensure:

  1. Leadership Supports Innovation.
  2. Structures and Resources Align to Enable Collaboration.
  3. Culture Reinforces Trust.

Without the right structures, even the most talented teams struggle to innovate. The Consortium’s research highlights that organizations with aligned goals, clear communication, and leadership support experience better healthcare outcomes and higher levels of trust.

Healthcare innovativeness isn’t just about technology or large-scale change—it’s about intentional, collaborative progress. The future belongs to organizations that invest in their people, culture, and structures.
